Who didn't know it: Garlic keeps blood, heart and blood vessels healthy. In addition, the tuber should also have a disinfectant effect and an anti-cancer property. One more reason why the cloves of garlic can be used more often in dishes.

You don't necessarily have to buy the garlic in the store. You can also multiply it with a single bulb of garlic from the garden. Because even a single tuber provided numerous toes for propagation. Alternatively, you can also grow new plants from so-called bulbils or from seeds. However, the multiplication from the toes is the easiest, which is why we recommend this variant.

Option 1 - multiplication by toes:

The most common form of propagation is toe sticking. Of course, you could also plant the garlic from the supermarket in your home garden as soon as your toes start to germinate. However, keep in mind that many types of garlic that are on the market come from the Mediterranean. So they are not adapted to our climate. Accordingly, they usually cannot develop properly in our gardens because they lack the consistently high temperatures.

With the bulbs from the supermarket, you could only be successful if you plant your toes in a flower pot, because outdoors the plants would not survive the winter. The best thing to do is to get the planting material in a nursery, because here you can be sure that the garlic will also thrive in your garden.

The best time to plant:

Make sure you stick your toes between March and April or between September and October. If you plant the garlic in spring, the plants usually stay a bit smaller. Autumn is therefore much more suitable.

How to do it:

It is best to use relatively large toes, as these usually also produce stronger plants. Remove the outer, dry skin of the toes and then insert them into the earth about 6 centimeters deep. The distance between the rows should be around 10 centimeters. Make sure that the tips of the cloves of garlic are facing upwards. After a short time, roots will develop and the long leaves will appear. Important: In winter, the tubers can rot easily if the moisture levels persist. Protect the root area with brushwood or straw.

Option 2 - propagation by broilers:

If you already have garlic plants in the garden, you can also use the broilers for propagation. This form of cultivation has a long tradition in Russia and is practiced there on a large scale.

The best time to plant:

Between July and August the plants develop inflorescences with shaggy umbels, which in turn contain the bulbs, the so-called bulbils. You can harvest these and replant them immediately.

How to do it:

Put the bulbs in rows in the soil, too, but only 1 to 2 centimeters deep. With this type of propagation, however, you must not remove the dry peel.

The negative: Not every type of garlic develops broiled onions. In any case, it must be shooting varieties. You also have to be patient with the garlic harvest, because in this case it will only be worthwhile from the second year onwards.

Option 3 - propagation by seeds:

You can also pull garlic from seeds. This is done very rarely these days, but it works. You can either buy the seeds commercially or grow them yourself. The seeds are in bloom in the upper part of the plant. These are extremely hard and have a purple color.

The best time to plant:

It is best to sow the garlic in February or October. It is important to choose a location that is as sunny and protected as possible.

How to do it:

Sow the seeds about 1 to 2 centimeters deep in the soil. Note a row spacing of about 10 to 15 centimeters. Then pour everything on well.
